Have We Forgotten How Real Cotton Feels?
The Indian market has become so used to viscose and poly mix fabrics that many people today no longer remember how original cotton is actually supposed to feel.
For years, softness has been sold to consumers through fabrics that feel instantly smooth, slippery, cold, and flowy from the very first touch. Slowly, that became the definition of “comfort” for many people, even though natural cotton behaves very differently.
Real cotton is not supposed to feel like viscose because both fabrics are made for completely different purposes. Viscose gives immediate softness and drape, while cotton adjusts to your body slowly, breathes naturally, absorbs sweat differently, and becomes softer beautifully with regular use and washing.
But today, many people compare cotton with viscose expecting the exact same first-touch feeling, and somewhere in this process we have started judging fabrics more by instant hand feel than by long-term comfort.
I feel this is one of the biggest shifts that has happened quietly in the fashion and textile industry over the years. The market has changed consumer expectations so much that natural fabric behaviour itself now feels unfamiliar.
And perhaps that is why today, conversations around fabric are becoming just as important as conversations around design, because somewhere between convenience, mass production, and visual appeal, we may have unintentionally forgotten the difference between artificial softness and natural comfort.
And maybe real comfort is not about what feels the softest in the first 10 seconds, but about what your skin still feels good in after wearing it for 10 hours.
