Perhaps Freedom Is Also the Courage to Choose Differently

As Independence Day approaches, we often think about the freedom India achieved in 1947. We think about the freedom to govern ourselves, make our own decisions and shape our own future. But perhaps there is another kind of freedom that we should think about as well: the freedom to govern ourselves as individuals.
The first freedom was the freedom to govern ourselves. Perhaps the next freedom is the freedom to create our own possibilities.

But how free are we if we are still trapped by our own fear, our old beliefs and the expectations we have accepted from society? We may be free to choose a different career, start a business, live differently or take a path that others have not taken. Yet, many times, it is not an outside force that stops us. It is our fear of failure, our fear of being judged or simply our fear of leaving what feels safe and familiar.

Perhaps freedom is not always about having more choices. Sometimes, it is about having the courage to choose differently.

Choosing differently is rarely easy. It may mean saying no when everyone around us is saying yes, starting again when it would be easier to continue with what we already know, or choosing discipline when comfort is the easier option.

A disciplined life is not always an easy life. It asks us to choose what is difficult today for something that may become meaningful tomorrow. It asks us to stay with a decision even when the excitement is gone and the results are still far away. Perhaps that is why freeing ourselves from our own comfort can sometimes be harder than being free from an outside restriction.

We often think of freedom as having no restrictions. But perhaps true freedom also means having the courage to question the limits we have created for ourselves.

This Independence Day, perhaps the question worth asking is not only whether we are free, but whether we are free enough to think differently, choose differently and build a life that is truly our own.

Because sometimes, the biggest freedom we are yet to experience is the freedom from the fear that tells us we cannot.
