Why Good Design Is Becoming a Competitive Advantage Again
The rise of artificial intelligence has made design more accessible than ever. Today, anyone can generate hundreds of prints, colour palettes, silhouettes and product concepts within minutes. What once demanded days of exploration can now be produced with a few prompts.
This technological shift has changed the speed of creation, but it has not changed the nature of good design.
When everything can be designed quickly, thoughtful design becomes rare.
That is because design is not the act of creating more options. It is the discipline of making better choices.
A well-designed product is rarely the result of a single moment of inspiration. It is the outcome of understanding proportions, materials, functionality, customer behaviour and the countless details that determine whether a product will simply be noticed or genuinely loved.
Consumers may not always explain why they are drawn to a particular product, but they instinctively recognise thoughtful design. They notice a silhouette that feels effortless, a print that remains elegant beyond a season, a fabric that falls naturally, and details that make a garment comfortable enough to become part of everyday life.
After nearly two decades in the apparel industry and now while building Yellow Bloom Lounge Wear, I have realised that good design is rarely about adding more. More often, it is about knowing what to leave out.
As technology continues to make creation easier, judgment becomes more valuable. The ability to distinguish between what looks attractive on a screen and what truly deserves to exist as a product will separate enduring brands from temporary ones.
The future of design will not belong to those who can create the most variations. It will belong to those who understand people well enough to create the right one.
In the years ahead, good design may become one of the rarest competitive advantages, not because it is difficult to produce, but because it is impossible to automate good judgment.
