Why Is a Saree an Emotion, But a Nighty Isn’t?
We often say that a saree is not just a piece of clothing, but an emotion, and it is a belief that is widely accepted without question. A saree represents memories, occasions, identity, and a sense of pride, which is why women are comfortable investing in it, preserving it, and valuing it beyond its utility.
But this brings up a question that is rarely asked. Why is a nighty not seen in the same way?
A nighty is the garment a woman spends the most time in. It is what she wears when she is at her most comfortable, most relaxed, and most herself. It is not worn for an occasion, but for everyday life, through routines that are real and unfiltered.
And yet, despite this, it has never been given the same emotional value. It is often treated as something basic, something functional, something that does not require attention to design, fabric, or how it makes a woman feel beyond comfort.
If clothing is truly about emotion, then this distinction is worth thinking about. Emotion cannot be limited only to how we present ourselves on special occasions. It also exists in how we feel in our everyday lives, in the clothes we live in for the longest hours.
A saree being called an emotion is not wrong. It absolutely is. But perhaps the definition of emotion in clothing has always been incomplete.
Because what we wear the most deserves just as much value, thought, and emotional connection as what we wear occasionally.
