Why The “Chanel Bag Theory” Is No Longer Limited To Luxury Fashion

People are no longer buying products only for utility. They are increasingly buying how a product makes them feel about themselves.

The “Chanel Bag Theory” was never really about handbags. It was always about human psychology.
In almost every market today, there are cheaper alternatives available for nearly everything. A person can buy a product that looks similar, functions similarly, and serves the same purpose for a fraction of the price. Yet some brands continue to hold extraordinary value across generations, economic cycles, and changing trends. The reason is because people are not only paying for utility. They are paying for emotional certainty, identity, aspiration, craftsmanship, and the feeling a product creates within them.
This shift is now becoming visible far beyond luxury fashion.
There was a time when categories like home wear were treated as purely functional purchases. Comfort alone was considered enough. But consumer behavior is slowly changing, especially among women who no longer want to separate comfort from confidence, aesthetics, or self-expression.
While building YELLOW BLOOM, one thing became increasingly clear to us. Many women were not simply looking for “nightwear.” They wanted clothing that felt soft on the skin, looked beautiful, carried emotional comfort, and still made them feel presentable enough to answer the door, step out briefly, attend a video call, travel, or simply feel good about themselves at home without feeling underdressed.
That realization changes the entire conversation around product building.
The future of premium brands may not belong only to companies selling expensive products. It may belong to brands that deeply understand how people want to feel while using those products.
In a world filled with aggressive discounts, constant advertising, and endless product choices, emotional connection is slowly becoming one of the strongest competitive advantages. People may initially notice a product because of marketing, but they stay loyal because of how consistently that product makes them feel.
That is why some businesses consciously choose not to compete in the race to become the cheapest option in the market. Instead, they focus on thoughtful design, fabric quality, emotional experience, consistency, and long-term trust. Because once a product becomes part of somebody’s lifestyle and identity, the conversation is no longer only about price.
The real value of a brand is often built quietly, long before the market fully notices it.
