Why Is a Saree an Emotion, But a Nighty Isn’t?

In India, we have always believed that a saree is not just a piece of clothing, but an emotion. It carries memories, traditions, identity, and a deep sense of pride, which is why spending seven or eight thousand on a saree rarely feels like a question. It is accepted, valued, and understood.

But this brings me to a thought that stays with me.

If a saree can be an emotion, why can’t a nighty be one?

A nighty is one of the most comfortable garments in a woman’s life. It is what she reaches for when she wants ease, when she wants to feel relaxed, when she is in her own space without any expectation to dress up or present herself in a certain way. In a country where a large number of women choose nighties as a part of their daily wear, it quietly holds a very important place in their lives.

And yet, we have never attached the same emotional value to it.

Somewhere, we have limited the idea of emotion in clothing only to occasions, to visibility, to moments where we are seen and appreciated. We have not extended that same thought to comfort, to ease, and to the everyday feeling of being at peace in what we wear.

But emotion is not only about celebration. It is also about how something makes us feel in the most natural, unguarded moments of our day.

A saree being an emotion is a beautiful truth, and it deserves that place.

But perhaps there is space to see things differently.

Perhaps a nighty, too, carries an emotion, one that is quieter, more personal, and deeply connected to comfort, ease, and the feeling of simply being yourself.

And maybe it is time we begin to recognise it.
